How to Avoid Pilling

Have you ever been halfway through your makeup routine and noticed your foundation balling up into tiny flakes?
That frustrating texture issue is called makeup pilling, and the good news is - it’s completely avoidable.

Here’s how to prep your skin and apply your products so you never have to deal with pilling again.

Step 1. Warm Up Your Moisturizer

Start with a small amount of moisturizer, dime sized is ideal. Using too much is one of the biggest causes of pilling. Warm it up between your fingers before applying so it absorbs better and doesn’t sit on top of your skin.

Once applied, let it sit on your skin for a minute or two to fully absorb and dry before moving to the next step. I personally love using a mini fan to speed up this process, it’s a game changer for a smooth base!

Step 2. Apply Primer Strategically

Primer is your best friend for a smooth base, but it should be used with intention.
Focus on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) where makeup tends to break down first, then blend outward.

Step 3. Let it Set

Once again the drying time is what makes all the difference and this is where most people rush and then run into problems halfway through their makeup routine. Let your primer fully dry before applying foundation, give it at least 30–60 seconds to set.

Step 4. Buff, don't Rub

When it’s time for foundation, use a buffing motion with your brush or sponge instead of rubbing or dragging. This keeps your base even and prevents disturbing the layers underneath. Harsh dragging and application of your base products is what often causes your makeup to pill as well.

In conclusion, makeup pilling doesn’t have to ruin your routine as with the right prep and application techniques, you can achieve a smooth, flawless base that lasts all day. A bonus tip is to try not to layer many products like serums, heavy creams and primers right before you begin your makeup. The simpler your skin prep, the smoother your base!

Try these steps the next time you get ready (mini fan included!) and you’ll notice the difference instantly.
