Is This the Secret to Long-Lasting Makeup? I Tried the Internet's Weirdest Base Routine

If you’re as addicted to scrolling through beauty related content as me, you’ve probably come across this viral hack that turns your base routine completely upside down.

Instead of starting with primer and then layering on foundation like we’ve always been told, this method flips the script:

Moisturizer → Setting Powder → Setting Spray → Primer → Foundation

Yes, I know what you're thinking. powder before foundation ? I was skeptical too. But I had to try it.

This routine first went viral a few years ago thanks to a makeup artist on TikTok who swore by it for a long-lasting, pore-blurring base, especially for oily or combo skin. It’s since been picked up by content creators around the world, each putting their own spin on it.

The idea is that the powder and spray create a long-wearing matte canvas under your makeup, giving your base more grip, smoother texture, and shine control.

Here’s exactly how I followed the routine:

  1. Moisturizer
I started with the Tatcha Water cream moisturiser that's hydrating and lightweight to prep and plump the skin.

  2. Loose Setting Powder
Using a fluffy brush, I lightly dusted the Huda Beauty setting powder all over my face.

  3. Setting Spray
I locked in the powder with a few spritzes of the MAC fix + setting spray and let it air dry completely before moving on.

  4. Primer
I applied my Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer after the setting spray focusing on areas with visible pores and let this sit for a few seconds before moving on to the last step.

  5. Foundation
Finally, I went in with my favourite Huda Beauty Easy Blur foundation and blended it in with a damp beauty sponge.

The results honestly surprised me, my skin did look smooth and slightly blurred, especially around my cheeks and forehead. My T-zone also stayed matte longer than my usual routine, however, would I recommend this for everyone? Not necessarily. But if you have oily or combo skin, want a longer-lasting base without baking or even just want to mess around a viral hack for some fun, it's worth a try! For dry or sensitive skin types, I’d suggest swapping in a more hydrating moisturiser and going very light on the powder.
